Frances Hodgkins

Femme du Monde

Frances Hodgkins, Femme du Monde, celebrates the life and work of one of New Zealand's favourite painters. Born in Dunedin in 1869, Frances Hodgkins left New Zealand forever in 1912 and the majority of working her career unfolded in Britain and Europe. By the end of her life, in 1947, she had at last reached a high point of critical success and acclaim after years of struggle and hardship. In this beautiful, illustrated book Alexa Johnston tells the story of her life and work, enlivened by quotes from her many delightful letters to family and friends. The works included are all held in the public collections of her home town, Dunedin.

"Utterly gorgeous – highly illustrated – an exquisite book"
